The ABCs of Women in Comics: P is for Princess Leia.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there was a princess, and she was a bad ass. As a princess and a senator, Leia is no stranger to responsibility. She’s a part of the rebellion against the galactic empire, taking huge personal risks to acquire key strategic information to facilitate the fall of her enemies. Leia refuses to lead from the sidelines, often grabbing a blaster and joining the ground assault against the Empire.
Leia also possess a razor sharp wit, and she uses it when having to deal with the naive farm boys, smarmy smugglers, goofy droids, and smooth talking scoundrels she has to deal with. The interactions between Leia and Han Solo are some of the most entertaining parts of the original Star Wars movies, where Leia puts the Solo in his place, time and time again.
Star Wars has had a long standing presence in comic books, dating back to shortly after the first movie hit the screens. After a long term relationship with Dark Horse Comics, Star Wars returned to Marvel, being brought into the fold after Disney bought the property rights. Marvel wasted little time, quickly putting some of their most talented writers and artists on the books, with industry stand outs Mark Waid and Terry Dodson scooping up Princess Leia. With all of the potential characters at their disposal, it was great to see Leia take her place as part of the first wave of the new Marvel line.
